Advances in modern technology have enabled horse riding hat
manufacturers to produce stronger and lighter hats that are comfortable
to wear, even for long periods of time. The increases in strength
delivered by Adjustable hats
modern materials mean that riding hats are safer than ever before but it
can result in a bewildering choice for the consumer. Hence, the advent
of British Riding Hat Standards enabling the informed consumer to make
an informed buying decision. The current British Standard is BS EN 1384,
which is the same as the European Standard EN 1384. This Standard
represents a major improvement on earlier standards and is said to
reduce brain injury by 40%. Remember, this is the current minimum
standard and you should not, therefore, entertain buying a riding helmet
that does not conform to this standard at the very least.
There are two further standards, both of which offer even greater
protection, namely, PAS 015:1994 and PAS 015:1998. In simple terms both
offer even greater protection than BS EN 1384 with cheap new era hats
greater protection for the crown and more emphasis placed on crush
resistance and stability. These standards are also recommended for the
more dangerous disciplines such as show jumping and eventing, for
obvious reasons.
The golden rule, therefore, is never buy a riding hat that does not
conform to the relevant British standard. Also, take care to check the
rules and guidance for the particular discipline that you are
participating in and make sure that your helmet complies. One final word
of advice. Never ever buy a used or second hand wholesale new era hats
riding hat. If it has not been looked after properly or has been damaged
in the past, it may no longer conform to the relevant standards. A
helmet that has suffered damage to the shell, for example, in a fall or
even simply from being dropped on the tackroom floor, may fail a stress
or crush test due to some weakness in the structure. The worse case
scenario is, of course, that it fails on you in a serious accident.
Accordingly, don't take the risk that you are buying a damaged hat and
always buy a new one!
