British Horse Riding Hat Standards Explained - A Guide to Horse Riding Helmets

Advances in modern technology have enabled horse riding hat manufacturers to produce stronger and lighter hats that are comfortable to wear, even for long periods of time. There are two further standards, both of which offer even greater protection, namely, PAS 015:1994 and PAS 015:1998. In simple terms both offer even greater protection than BS EN 1384 with cheap new era hats greater protection for the crown and more emphasis placed on crush resistance and stability. These standards are also recommended for the more dangerous disciplines such as show jumping and eventing, for obvious reasons.

The golden rule, therefore, is never buy a riding hat that does not conform to the relevant British standard. Also, take care to check the rules and guidance for the particular discipline that you are participating in and make sure that your helmet complies.One final word of advice. Never ever buy a used or second hand wholesale new era hats riding hat. If it has not been looked after properly or has been damaged in the past, it may no longer conform to the relevant standards. A helmet that has suffered damage to the shell, for example, in a fall or even simply from being dropped on the tackroom floor, may fail a stress or crush test due to some weakness in the structure. The worse case scenario is, of course, that it fails on you in a serious accident. Accordingly, don't take the risk that you are buying a damaged hat and always buy a new one!
